SPRING LEAGUE UPDATE

The Spring League is in full swing with lots of tennis interest and new players!

Sixty-eight men make up 4 teams that are playing on Thursday nights.  Team captions are Jared Gautreau, Chan King, Steve Barrow and Fred Williams.  Seventy-two ladies are playing on Monday nights with a Tri-level league and a 3.0 league.  Captains for Tri-level are:  Val Lambert, Cheri Johnson, Sheryl Palmisano, Julie Fox, Lillian Pasos, Arlene Brignac and Rita Patrizi.  Captains for the 3.0 teams are Cathy Lennier and Ruby West.  The 2.0 league, coordinated by Jeri Leader and Gloria Berthelot, compete against each other on Tuesday nights as they learn tennis fundamentals.  We appreciate all captains as they represent the success of all the leagues

YOUTH PROGRAM

QUICKSTART Tennis is being implemented throughout the U.S. which is a new program designed for youth starting at age 5 through 10.  The program designed by USTA is an opportunity to grow and create interest in tennis at an early age in addition to a quick start. The new program involves a shorter court with four nets, foam balls and shorter racquets. ATA will implement this program during the youth clinic in May.  Bill Phillips with the USTA Southern Section will be present on Saturday, May 10 to assist ATA with this program.

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

We salute the three high school tennis teams in the parish with their coaches and mentors.

  • East Ascension with coaches Dirk Schexnaydre and Wanda Mayers
  • Dutchtown with coach  Kevin Klump
  • St. Amant with coach  Michelle Walker

ATA appreciates the coaches and sponsors for their dedication to the students.  The three schools are in the process of competing with area Baton Rouge teams and will go to National and State competition in May.  Good luck to the teams!!!

TENNIS STARS

Congratulations to ATA members Wanda Mayers, Lori Barbier, Wanda Berthelot and Leslie Falgoust who competed in the 3.5 Division at the Tops'l  Beach Tennis Resort in Fort Walton, Florida in March. Their team defeated five southern teams to place first in their division. The Baton Rouge team has participated in this event for ten years.

GO GIRLS!!!
